Mental Health Internships

A Career Path with Purpose


Established in 1980, the Associated Clinic of Psychology (ACP) is known throughout the Twin Cities and Western Wisconsin as a leader in preventing, diagnosing, and treating mental health issues. Our commitment to clients is to provide a comprehensive array of mental health services. ACP has several different divisions providing a broad range of services in a variety of settings: our Outpatient Clinics, our Geriatric division which provides services in long-term care facilities, nursing homes, and other facilities, and also our Community-Based division which provides a number of services in homes, schools and other community settings. Our internship program is looking for qualified practicum students for a 9+ month internship.

Community-Based Division


Structure of the Practicum: 

  • Opportunities to conduct diagnostic assessment, develop treatment plans, and provide a variety of clinical services including child and adult therapy, ARMHS and CTSS.
  • PTO is earned based on hours worked

Our interns will develop experience by:

  • Following best practices standards of the program
  • Learning to work in a community-based setting (homes, group homes, etc.)
  • Traveling within the metro area. Possession of a valid driver's license and auto insurance is required.
  • Maintaining a minimum of 10 billable hours per week initially and committing to 15 billable hours per week over the remainder of the internship
  • Working with diverse populations
  • Practicing effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrating mental stability and modeling appropriate boundaries
  • Learning to complete timely and accurate submission of documentation and other documents as required

Community-Based Supervisors


Geriatrics Division


Structure of the Practicum: 

  • Opportunities to provide diagnostic assessments, write treatment plans and provide therapy to older adults in long-term care settings.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to promote continuity of care.
  • Quality supervision throughout the internship.

Our 3-Tier Approach: 

  1. Shadow with other Geriatric Clinicians
  2. Joint sessions with supervisor and intern (as long as appropriate)
  3. Independent work doing diagnostic assessments, therapy, consultations and in-service

Our interns will develop experience by: 

  • Following best practice standards of the program.
  • Working with older adults in their own environment.
  • Possessing a willingness to receive feedback and promptly making changes.
  • Maintaining a professional demeanor and having effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Completing timely and accurate submission of documentation and other documents as required.
  • Demonstrating emotional intelligence/maturity and modeling appropriate boundaries.
  • Working with diverse populations and having an openness/awareness of their own personal biases.
  • Traveling within the Twin Cities Metro area. Possession of a valid driver's license and auto insurance is required.
  • Maintaining a minimum number of billable hours.
  • Fun Fact: To date, all of the MSW candidates that have completed an internship at ACP have passed their LGSW exam!

DBT Division


Structure of the Practicum:

  • A structured orientation program that includes shadowing group and individual sessions, training in the Linehan adherent DBT model, completing intakes and sessions with supervisors and other licensed team members, recording sessions to review with supervisors, and a comprehensive list of directed, independent study resources.
  • Opportunities to complete diagnostic assessments, functional and symptom assessments, treatment plans, 1:1 DBT therapy, and skills coaching; opportunities to teach mindfulness and DBT skills in weekly groups.

Our interns will develop experience by:

  • Following best practices standards of the program
  • Working with diverse populations and having an openness/awareness of their own personal biases
  • Providing therapeutic services to individuals with complicated and/or suicidal behaviors
  • Possessing a willingness to receive feedback and promptly make changes
  • Having professional written and verbal communication skills
  • Being self-directed but willing to ask for assistance when needed
  • Completing documentation accurately, professionally, and in a timely manner
  • Demonstrating emotional intelligence and maturity and modeling appropriate boundaries
  • Having basic knowledge of using technology (Zoom, EHR, email, telehealth, Google calendars)
  • Maintaining a minimum number of billable hours based on program requirements
